Writing Challenge Week 3

An albatross chick at Taiaroa Head on the Otago Peninsula needs a new name.
Your task is to design a name for the chick and then explain your inspiration for selecting this name. We will be looking for
  • originality and creativity of the name and inspiration
  • relevance to the chick, colony or species
  • names that reflect of the characteristics of the species or their habitat on the peninsula.
Persuade us that this name is the best possible for this bird by using emotive language and research to back your opinion.
Winners will be submitted to the Department of Conservation for consideration before 27 May.

  1. Albadora?
I chose this becuase I was inspired by the name of the species:albatross, and mixed it with a human name.

  2. If the bird is a girl: Shubhrani. In bengali, shubhra means white (when done as a girl's name) and rani means queen, seeing as, when I searched it up, the bird is a royal albatross.

If the bird is a boy: Shubhroraj. Again, the name I chose is bengali. Shubhro is the male form of Shubhra, which means it also means white. Raj means king. So, basically, they're the same name, just altered for different genders.

For short, you could call the albatross Shubhra (girl) or Shubhro (boy) depending on the gender.

  3. Billy, the reason I chose this name is clearly because it has a bill and I think it suits it because it sounds like a name the people at the zoos would call it.

  5. With their giant wing span I think albatrosses rule the sky.
You can find some albatrosses in Japan, and in japanese Sorano means king of the sky. Therefore I think albatross should be called Sorano.

The King of the Sky, Sorano

  7. (If it's a girl)
I think the perfect name for this pampered Albatross chick would be Madonna. I think this name goes perfectly to a chick who looks like they are dedicated to keeping her feathers shiny and white! And she is obviously getting a lot of attention.

    (If it's a Boy)
I think a great name to go with this Albatross would be Mac. Mac is a short strong word for a muscly bird like him. And in that photo he looks like he is the boss!!

  10. Bill or Billy?

    Why?
Bill and Billy is a commonly used name for a boy. Usually the name is very adventurous, outgoing, carefree, handsome, and has a good sense of humor. Tends to have very good taste in music.
